Ignition Lock Cylinder or Switch?
2001 S40 gave me some key issues last weekend. The key would not turn in the ignition. I tried all 3 of our keys, wiggled the keys and stuck my tongue out just right and eventually got it to turn and start the car. My daughter says it has happened a few times prior to this. No other trouble since Sunday.
Same deal on an 04 Honda Odyssey. Had to have a new ign. lock installed and purchase a new key. Damn chipped keys ain't cheap.
I found a YouTube video dealing with the electronic part under the ign. lock cylinder, the switch. Looks like a couple hour job. The dude never really said what his symptoms were tho.
Any thoughts from the experts out there?
Thanks,
Clark

I would spray some WD40 inside the ignition switch to make sure it's not a simple lack of lube issue.
Also, when it gave you trouble did you try to wiggle the steering wheel? When the steering lock is tight agaisnt the stops the ignition key will be tight too.

Thanks, I have done the spray. I use a local product called Sili-Kroil. Penetrating-Lubricating Oils
Great stuff and has silicone in it.
We have not had the issue since my OP. But I will make sure to check the steering wheel lock next time.

You can't.
I'm not sure if this would apply to your model year, but have a look:
How To: Fix your Ignition Switch

when I used WD40 that’s when my ignition stopped working it’s on lock ai cannot get it to move. I used to e blue to turn the wheel and it would click so I was able to start car but after WD40 Now it’s locked the key stopped working. Ugh! It’s been parked for 2 years now because of this
FulangChang, I'm not clear about what you're seeing. You say "...ai cannot get it to move". Does this mean that the key switch is in the locked position and cannot be turned by an inserted key ? If so, see below.
In general, the ignition switch module is moderately simple to remove and disassemble. There is a mechanical layer and an electronic layer. There is an electrical interlock that blocks the REMOVAL of the key if the central brain thinks the car's in gear. The good news is that the switch does not need programming - the fault is either mechanical or electrical (i.e. switch contacts).
