judder

RE: judder
Pretty easy.
Whip off the plastic cover on top of the engine & follow the air ducting from the air filter housing to the inlet manifold. The ducting should be attached to the throttle housing by a hose clip. You may need to unclip the ducting at other points too, to get it pulled out of the way.
The throttle body has a "butterfly" in it that turns up to 90 degrees. It is the butterfly & the inside of the housing it is in that needs to be liberally sprayed with carb cleaner. the spray can should come with an extension nozzle - use the nozzle to get cleaner right in there, but make sure it doesn't detach & fall off.
Make sure that when reassembling the hose clips are properly secured to avoid air leaks.
Good luck, interested to know how you get on.

If the air ducting joints are all good (i.e. no leaks) then next thing I'd do is replace the spark plugs. No need for mega expensive jobbies, standard copper plugs will do fine.
If the problem persists after that, then one of the 2 coils (the plastic things you need to unbolt to get to the 2 right-hand spark plugs - they sit right on top of the 2 spark plugs) may be developing a fault. Might be worth buying 1 coil, replacing (but keeping safe) one of the coils & see how she goes. If that doesn't work, replace the second coil with the one you replaced & kept safe first off.
After that, you're looking at maybe ignition leads & then checking fuel filter & pump.
Hope the plugs do the trick.

Aha - if you've got a coil above each plug then your S40 has the GDI engine Ian - should say GDI on the plastic engine cover? Check that none of the leads to the coils have been trapped or damaged under that cover.
Unless the plugs have been changed recently, I'd fit a new set & if that doesn't cure it, maybe fit 1 new coil (keep the original coil safe). Fit the new coil above a different spark plug every day (and keep the original coil for that spark plug safe) until faulty coil is found & problem is cured. If no cure then consider a new set of HT leads.
Other than ignition it could be a fuel supply problem, but prime suspect is part of the ignition system for my money - the judder when warm could be a misfire & the cold starting problem and erratic tickover look like being other symptoms of that.
Interested to know how things go.
