K&N filter in S40 T5
I had an Acura MDX, and it wasn't getting quite the mileage I thought it should. I went through quite a few parts chasing the missing efficiency (which translates into missing horsepower). Finally tossed the K&N air filter element that the PO had installed, and put in a paper element. Instantly got my MPG back.
Worse, if you're looking at one of those goofy cone filters that float around in the engine compartment, you'll be making LESS horsepower and reducing your MPG. The stock airbox breathes better than anything you're going to buy on the aftermarket without paying a fortune / cutting new holes in sheet metal.

I used the lifetime oil-less high flow air filter from IPD on my S60 and it made cute turbo noises
Just blew it out with air every oil change.
And yeah like habbyguy said, dont do the hot air intake mod

not a fan of KN for cars with a MAF. KNs use a wet filter that can lead to some of the oil getting on the MAF. Volvo factory airboxes are pretty good stock so why change from a paper filter? Days of getting HP from a different air filter was back when moms were driving Buicks with a carb...
