Default Leaky Sunroof -

My sunroof leaks and its rain season

The plastic seal around has shrunk and dried over the years so when its closed, you can actually see a gap where the water just flows on in...

It seems like a relatively easy job to replace, but I haven't been able to find.

1) Is this as easy as it looks?
2) Where can I get the parts? (I'm in SF)

Thanks!

These sunroofs are designed to leak around the seals thats why there is a drain around the glass. You might want to check the drains first.

You might still need a new seal but can you see it leaking from one place specifically?

I've seen cases where the drain holes themselves are blocked so then the water backs-up. If dirty, blow it out with an air compressor nozzle or something similar.

Ilai,
it is hard to see if the holes in the sun roof are clogged... Is there any tip/trick to access them ?

The rears are really hard to see.

But if you slide the sunroof all the way back you should be able to see the front drain holes easy. They are in the front corners.

The sunroof seal is replaceable but not as easy as it looks. It is a serviceable part. How old is the car up to 2004? The biggest problem is that underneath the seal there can be corrosion to the reinforcement where the seal is attached to. You can not see this without removing the seal. If the corrosion is really bad it will be very difficult to get the new seal to fit properly. If you still decide to do this first is to get the glass panel removed. Put the glass in tilt / vent position. Remove the plastic side covers at both sides by pulling backwards. Then you will see two srcews at both sides. Remove all 4 screws. About 2-3 inches backward of the front screw there is a little clip. You have to remove this and now you can remove the glass. Disconnect the little pin from the glass reinforcement and in the rear you can push the glass up and the backet that is attached to the glass can be removed from the mechanism. If you get a new seal and decide to do this this is where you have to look for. The new seal has a lip at the bottom. The lip is only needed in the front (to prevent glass lift at higher speeds). Look at the old seal and you can see where the lip is cut away. There are also two slide pads at the front corners. These are there to push the wind deflector down when closing. Mark the location. These slide pads are pushed on the seal after the seal is assembled. You can use some super glue to keep them in place. Last is the seal joint in the rear. To cut the seal is tricky because there is a steel carrier inside. Best is to use a dremel cut off wheel. You can glue the ends together with super glue but don't put glue in between the reinforcement and the glass. This can cause the glass to break.

Good luck.
