I have a 2001 s40-great car, but my shifter lights no longer work. Everything else does work, so I am assuming this is a bulb. Is this a complicated fix? In other words, can I do it, or is this something best left to the dealer to replace? I tried to replace a headlight and ended up having to replace the whole headlight assembly.

Someone here in the S40 section should be able to help you. You may also want to try Google, " Volvo S40 shifter light replacement" or something.

 

It's not difficult replacing the bulb. It is a bit tight with big hands. You remove the lower shifter surround to access it. My dealer wanted some outrageous price for the bulb so I found a substitute locally. Can't remember the exact one though. Good time to lube the shifter lock solenoid too.

 

Thanks for the input. Is it complicated to find and access once I get the surround off? I am nervous about getting the whole thing apart then not being able to find stuff or get it back together.

 

2000 v40...........replaced the shifter (tiny-bulb) with two from a local auto-parts neither of which worked...9 dollar bulb from the dealer worked.
