Looking to buy my first volvo!
As the title suggests I am looking to buy my first volvo an s40 I have owned focuses in the past and loved them and this seems similar but better in every way. I have worked hard and want to treat myself to something a bit nicer but I still need something good on mpg and reliable as I am working full time with regular commuting to work and also school. What I want to know is what to look for with S40s? the one I have in mind has 130k on it advice please and thank you

Volvo's can be long lasting and reliable, but getting it repaired can be a bit more expensive and down time a little longer than other brands. Unless you are a fairly skilled DIY with a good sense for evaluating used cars make sure you get it examined by a good independent Volvo mechanic that is conveniently located for future use.

Yes, it is far more solid feeling than the comp. Focus. I am very happy with my V50 after driving the Focus wagon. If you are DIY, your maint. costs will be reasonable except for electronics which REQUIRE dealer attention.
If fuel econ. is important, get a used Prius. The S40/ V50 line are "sports" transportation, and that transverse 5 is running all the time, especially in traffic. Open road mileage is fairly good, about the same as my 1994 Camry.
With a VIN, you can check the PO's maintenance for free at myCarFax.com if it was serviced at a dealer. A history of regular oil changes is a must.

My wife has an '05 S4i, it is pretty basic transportation, does not get great mileage and has a small tank so it seems like we get gas a lot. I liked our S60 much better. My mom has a plug in Prius which I find a lot of fun to drive and you can really get some good mileage out of it, since you have a long commute I would try driving each of them I find the Prius much more comfortable, and neither compares to the S60 for long drive comfort.
