Default Need Help! New Member. 2006 S40 Owner

I bought my 2006 S40 in January with 54,000 miles. I now have 64,000 miles. The other day the car seemed to lose power, cut off and then after letting it sit for 2 mins or so it started up again only to do the same thing. Had it towed to a volvo specialist. They said it had no oil. Even though the oil was changed a a month and half ago. The specialist put oil in the car had me drive it and drives now without cutting off BUT it has a noticeable hum/whistle noise. He says he believes there was no damage to engine (yet), but that the oil separator is clogged and needs to be replaced. Showed me the the cap on the engine where there is suction when you try to remove it which tells him the oil is not circulating. Here's my dilemma. Says he can do the job for $450, replace oil seperator and obviously oil and filter change because the oil separator is a little costly. When I go online I see the oil separator is $34.99-$50.00 brand new. Does all this seem right? We did realize since we had the car oil has only been changed 2x. Any advise is appreciated! He's waiting for me to let him know to do the work now.

Where do you see it for that cheap? It should be about $180

Wrong part.

There was an extended warranty on them for some cars. Call the dealer to see if it applies to yours. Then the replacement would be free.

This won't cause your stalling though.

Would the no oil have caused the stalling? I'll call the dealership this morning. I just want to make sure this specialist isn't trying to pull a fast one on me telling me I need the oil separator replaced due to clogging.

While I don't doubt the oil trap needs replacement, I doubt his diagnosis. If there was absolutely no oil, the engine would seize. It would not start again once oil was added. If it was low, it would not cause the car to stall out.

The suction and the price to fix the PCV/oil filter casting and its plumbing fit together well, unless you are covered by the (US only, I think) extended warranty that was mentioned.

However, my big concern is "Where did the oil GO?" Six quarts of oil makes a BIG mess. (Even one quart - ask me how I know.)

And... welcome to the forum!

Did you have a check engine light on now?

Check the extended warranty for the PVC system as mentioned above.

Who did your oil change and what was the miles? How many miles ago since then? I've seen these engines run with 1.5 Qts lol You have other concerns other than a clogged breather box. If you live in the U.S there's life time parts warranty, take advantage of the deal as long as you own the vehicle.
