I'm finishing up some top end work on a 2004 V40. I have a new exhaust cam sprocket. It has no timing mark also I can't seem to move the sprocket thru its advance once it's bolted to the camshaft. Any suggestions?

 

Line up the old CVVT gear with the new one. Mark the new one in the same place as the old one.

IIRC the gear is spring loaded to return to a starting position. At least mine seemed to be. Not 100% sure.

 

That is the second problem I'm having. The original cam gear would rotate maybe 15 degrees and spring back when released. When I reinstalled the sprocket it would no longer rotate. I replaced it with a new one and it does not seem to want to rotate either. I'm scratching my head on that one. Anybody know what's going on here?

 

Right or wrong I rotated mine back to the position of was in when the belt was on with something like this. I marked so many things with paint pens after getting the crank pulley in position and seeing the timing marks we're good that even though they may have turned from spring load, I was able to get everything in the same position as when the belt was under tension.

 

The VVT cam sprocket has a position in the cam axle? Or I just set the time mark after screw the torq?

The other is easy because the three bolts guides you the rigth position in the axle but the CVVT?

If I don't install in the same position was before could be the time diferent even if I set the mark in the right postion?

 

Both the cam and the gear have to remain in the same position. Did you lock the cams in position before removing the CVVT gear? You can still recover the proper position with a cam holder tool. This tool locks the cams in the proper position so you can line up the CVVT gear mark with the mark on the plastic cover.

That is the problem now, a mechanic comes to open the head cover and remove the camshafts, now I don't see what is the right position even usign the cam holder tool.

How do I now which of the valve presser must be up/down to set the horizontal position of the mark to be holded by the cam holder?

 

The holder should only fit one way. This thread has a pic of the position.
