Noise when coasting
With my '02 s40, I started getting a strange mechanical noise while coasting. It sounds like a bad rotor but I get it regardless if the brake is applied or if just coasting. When I accelerate it seems to go away.
It started at about 75k miles. I thought it might be a control arm and my mechanic said that the rear control arms (Upper and Lower) were worn and should be replaced. They were replaced and the noise went away but now has came back after about 400-500 miles of driving.
I think it might be a simple as tires, but other things I thought it can be would be drive axle, CV joint, wheel bearing/hubs and even the transmission.
Any thoughts? Thanks.

Is the 02 s40 AWD by any chance?
If so have you replaced any tires and not all four at the same time? If so it could be this.
As I have something that sounds similar to your problem. Oh it could be a wheel bearing too.

Thanks... no the car is front wheel drive. Actually I noticed the sound after replacing the Dunlop tires with Firestone Firehawks. But I don't think it's the tires.
It's definitely a rubbing sound (metal to metal possibly). It's not a whining sound and it seems to come and go. Some days it will be loud other days faint or not at all. It sounds like it's coming from the front passenger side wheel.
I drove it with my mechanic and he isn't sure what it is either. He doesn't think it's the wheel bearing. I take it in this coming Wednesday so he can really take a hard look at it. So hopefully something turns up.
I hate chasing problems and no really sure at this point if it's a safety issue, so I figure I would post my problem here to see if anyone else had something similar.

Well the mechanic said it could possibly be the axles. He mentioned that there is some play in the CV joint. But wasn't sure if that was it or not. The axles and CV joint aren't bad so at the cost of replacing them he recommended that I don't.
What I did end up doing was replacing the front brake pads and rotors. The noise I thought might of been a bad rotor also. So at this point the noise is gone. But am curious to see if it will return.
