Default Noisy Fuel Pump/Rough Idle

I have a 2000 S40 with 112,000 miles. My fuel pump has been making a loud, high pitched whining sound for a while now. I have also been getting an intermittent rough idle when it's in "drive" with the break applied, followed by engine hesitation when I try to accelerate. It idles fine in "park". Has anyone else had this problem? Could the fuel pump cause these symptoms?

Also, could anyone suggest a good place to buy a replacement pump? The dealer said it would cost $300. Thanks.

Before you replace the pump check the spark plugs and the coils.

Are you sure it is the fuel pump? I know my fans are pretty loud. I have 01 s40 and I get a rough idle when I am in drive and stopped. I think you might want to check the plugs, it is the second thing I replaced. K&N was the first. Good luck. Let us know what you find out.

I'm sure the noise is the fuel pump, but not sure if the pump is causing my problems. I verified the source of the noise by pulling the fuse for the pump while the engine was running. The noise went away when I did that. I've had the pressure checked two different places. One said it "meets Volvo specs" and the other said the pressure was "borderline" but didn't necessarily think the pump needed to be replaced.

So far, I have replaced the spark plugs, but it didn't help. I'll try to check the coils as tech suggested when I get a chance.

Look at them closely. You might see them cracked. If they are cracked they should be replaced.

Is there any trick to removing/installing the coils? It looks like they are secured with one bolt. (Sorry if this is a dumb question. I haven't done it before.)

By the way, I found out I have a code for cylinder #3 misfire. Hopefully, I'm on the right track now.

Yes just remove the one screw and it will pull out.

I think you are on the right track.I will bet that is your problem.

I had the same problem. I was the coils. Replace both and that should fix it. They are about $50 each. As far as teh fuel pump, I don't know.

Thanks. I checked the coils and they were both cracked, one worse than the other. It looks like I'll have to order them, but I'll let you know if that does the trick.

Thanks for the advice. That was right on. I replaced the coils and haven't had any trouble for almost a week now.

I'm still a little worried about the fuel pump though. It's pretty noisy. Is that a sign it will go out soon? How long do they typically last? I have 113,000 miles on the car now.

The fuel pumps usualy last a long time.

Just because the are noisey doesn't mean they will go soon.

On one of my cars I have had for nine years had a noisy fuel pump when I got it and it still drives now.
