Noisy Pump?
Looking for some help/guidance. 2004.5 S40 T5 I am assuming this is some sort of vacuum pump, but not sure which one(see pic). Problem: the pump starts up the second the key is inserted into the ignition and continues to run while the car is running. After shutting the car off it will remain running anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds. The other concern is that it is quite noisy, started about a month ago, sounds like a fan running inside a housing, a whirring noise, I can clearly hear it when parked or at a stop. I have not noticed any performance issues. Searching other posts it sounds like perhaps it is the brake vacuum pump, I saw that the 2000 and 2001's had a recall on them, I am not experiencing any braking problems or any other noticeable issues. Any help would be great.

Yes that is the brake vacuum pump. It does run alot normally. But if it got louder it might be going bad. But it really shouldn't start till the car is running. Check the bigger hose that comes off of it. In the line there is an electric valve make sure that isn't broke.
Thanks tech, I will check the valve in more light tomorrow. Worst case scenario anyone have any idea how much the pump is? I have searched the net high and low including most of the links listed in the new members area here. I will call Volvo themselves but if anyone had thoughts on this before then that would be great.
Don't want to sound like an idiot but do I just need to pull the hose off the front to check the valve? It twists without resistance but I pulled with some force and it did not show signs of moving, I would pull harder but afraid of breaking something.
