Default P1618 error code?

Looking into buying a used volvo s40 Year 2000. Went to go check it out and the check engine light is on, the car spit out the error code p1618 can't figure out what it has to do with because the car is gas-powered and the error code has to do with a diesel powered car? error code read as glow plug/heater short circuit to b+

Any suggestions would be immensely helpful. No other lights are on? Person who is selling it to me said the original owner suspected the pnp switch?

Original owner is probably right. I disassembled and repaired my PNP switch. Most people would probably be better off just replacing it, though the part is pricey unfortunately.

P1618 refers to a comm error betwen the ECU and TCU... which is why the PNP (the shifter's position sensor feeds signal to both) diagnosis makes total sense to me. It can also point to a connector problem - check out volvowiringdiagrams.com if you need to...

In hindsight I wish I would have got a new one. I took mine apart too, was riveted, I drilled out the 9 rivets and bolted it back together with stop nuts. All is good since I did that, it was pretty immaculate inside but cleaned it up a and put some dielectric grease on it.

Mine had a P0705 code but no more intermittent starting.
