Cool Pain in the Brake

Hi all,

After some poking around here and elsewhere I decided to move forward with replacing the rear pads on my 2005 S40 2.4i Base. I gathered the necessary tools (13mm wrench, 13mm socket, 7mm Hex, a couple of pry tools, lithium grease, brake cleaner, etc) and got to work. After getting everything apart and cleaned I reached for my Harbor Freight Universal Brake Piston Tool and attempted to match up the key way. FAIL! This key does not match up with the piston. I checked a dozen times or more and it just doesn't have a match. Has anyone else had this experience? What was your solution? Does Napa, AutoZone, or O'Reilly's have one that will work?
I can make on of these at work with my 3-axis mill and a rotary table but I'd like to avoid the extra work. Any real world advice or known solutions are greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Josh

Not all the rear pistons are the same. The tool should have a good number of different keys to fit.If you dont have but one see your local AZ and rent the right one.I myself are fine with the long nose pliers just suck it up push and turn.

It's the 5-sided tool that attaches to a 3/8's ratchet, so I was a bit surprised when it wouldn't match up with the piston's key. I'll call around to some stores in the morning and post an update with my solution.

Default Pain in the Brake

I first got my road bike with hands and arms hurt after a long journey. Handlebars are slightly tilted so that the area between your thumb and index finger resting comfortably, and the pain was gone. Then my bike Friday, was pre-owned. When is the first trip of 45 miles, my hands were killing me, because REACH is too long and the weight was in my hands. I was leaning too far forward. I went to a bike shop and buy the adjustable arm. The pain is gone.

Talking

I spoke with a gentleman at AutoZone about loaning a brake tool. They don't loan that tool, but they do sell a brake kit that includes the correct tool for $55. He said to come and get it, do the brake job and bring it back for a full refund. Nice!

I was looking to take the caliper off my 05 S40 but i was surprised to see a different type of bolt. I think that's what's called a Torx? None of my allen keys fit.

Josh, can you give me a detailed description on how to change the pads and rotors.

I'm very new to Volvo's and don't want to make mistakes. Thanks

I will document this with photos as I go and then post everything. I'll try to have that up by tonight.

Josh,

To replace bearing, do I need a special tool?

I emailed a mechanic some weeks ago and this was his response:

'On your vehicle the bearing is a single unit, that needs to be pressed in and out. That kind of job I charge $150'

Seemed like it was a harder job that requires a special tool? What tool?
