Default possible future problem with odomoter

Hey y'all. I have a 2008 S40 T5 with about 87,000 miles. I have seen stories of odomoter failure. We all know that many Volvo owners take pride in high mileage. I know that odomoter fraud is illegal, but I have a question. If you ever have to have the original odometer replaced, is it possible to spring it forward to pick up where the old one left off, and would that still be illegal?

Yes, In the early 90's while I worked at Buick the 89-90 speedometers had issues which required replacement with new units from Buick. I worked in Tampa and we would send the new head to Techni-Car to have the odometer set to the cars mileage. We never would report the car being TMU (true mileage unknown) to the DMV. Now the digital odometers like the Reatta and riviera had the mileage stored in the computer not the dash. My 98 V70 has a digital odometer and I wonder if the mileage is stored in the head or computer. That era of cars had problems like that almost all Chryslers and Fords odometers would die too.

I recently bought an 08 s40 2.5 and felt stupid when I realized that my quoted low mileage was just that mileage. As I live in Canada did really mean much since my low mileage when converted was high but it wasn't low either.

Anyway, I have contacted a number of dealers and was told very specifically that you cannot switch it out. In my case just wanted to get a metric one.

Any thoughts? As I have seen several advertized on ebay and am up for doing it myself.
thanks

Hello!

I thought this may be right place to ask a simple question. My grandpa has 2002 s40, he said that his odometer doesnt turn off after turning off the ignition. Hes sure that it turned off befor. Could u tell me wich is the normal?-> To be able to see the mileage after turning off the ignition or not to see.

ThankYou
