Power Steering Hissing

Hello Bruce,
Greetings from Narita, Japan.
Sorry about the problem.
I would believe the hissing is caused by air in the system, in which case you can bleed the system by turning the steering wheel from lock-to-lock 3-4 times with the car at rest with the engine at idle. If it were not for the air, check on the fluid level; it may be low. Or, the accessory drive belt may be slipping under load (power steering. air-conditioner, etc...) in which case the only solution is to replace the belt with OEM belt (I am not sure if the belt tensioner wears out on the S40s). Also, visually inspect the PWS hoses & lines for signs of fluid leak.
Please note that I am not privy to the S40 series, so refer to the owner's manual for component locations and specific fluid type, and see if other S40 owners or Moderator Tech can reply; they could give you better advice than I possibly could.
I hope this gets you started. Sorry I couldn't help you better.
