A question about trannys...
No, not about those guys that walk funny; about my transmission.
I have a 2000 S40, with the automatic transmission. I have a habit when driving, to down shift to 3rd gear to slow down. I don't do this at highway speeds however. Is this harmful to the transmission? I have a little over 115k on the car, and a recent check of the transmission fluid showed nice, clean, pink fluid.
Thanks

I used to do this some in my '02 S40. That tranny was adaptive and seemed to get a little confused and shift a little abrupt until it re-adapted. I am not sure if this was harmful but I never had any tranny issues with the car. I believe that the 2000 was not adaptive.

I do downshift to 4th every time I get off the highway or driving it traffic.Shifting to 3rd must be the same.I had no problem so far for doing this.I imagine if you would drop to 3rd to gain acceleration then push it that would probably not help to saver the tranny.Every time I shift gears I ease up on the throttle give it a second to adopt then floor it.
