Default Replacement of cigarette lighter socket in 2004 S40

So I have the one where the socket is located near the gear shifter, like in this photo. The inside of it is really rusty and I can't get a good connection for my charger/FM transmitter. I got by so far by twisting and pressing the plug until it works, but since yesterday, even that isn't working. How can I remove the socket and replace it? I can't find a proper replacement part and am unsure about universal ones and other aftermarket one. I can't find any videos for this car either.

Thanks.

Check the fuse too. I've blown the fuse when a penny fell inside and shorted it out. Otherwise I'd suggest taking some very fine sandpaper (200-400-600ish) and just sanding that rust. You can also try DeOxit contact cleaner.

+1 on the fuse, plus you can also try using a pick tool to pry out the contacts to force better contact

My 1998 Volvo V70xc has two cigarette lighter sockets, one next to the gearshift and another at the rear of the console.
They are wired together, and often a blown fuse will make them not work when the key is in the on position (you don't have to start).
They are working fine.

I'm going to try unscrewing the console lighter from the top ring, as I have pulled up the gear shift cover and intend to remove the shifter assembly to access the solenoid, which is stuck and preventing the shift button from working. The wires to the socket are not easily removed, and I refuse to cut them.

Early or late 2004? (two different cars) The 99-2004 parts may not be available anymore and Volvo lighters (after about 1998) are not anything like generic. Generic does not fit. Your best bet would be used or cleaning with a tiny wire brush or sandpaper on a stick.

Here's parts pages for both. If you have a 2004.5 there's a second lighter in the back of the console. And they are not generic either - google the part number from the page and you will see.

Early lighter ---

Late 2004 lighter ----

Actually the "ring" is the ridge on the socket. The socket is held in by tabs. See picture.

There are two wires, the yellow one is the hot lead. The tabs are difficult to release; I'm not sure if I should press on the top or the bottom of the blade. The black ground lead is not shown.
If I can free up these wires, I can leave the socket attached to the trim and get it out of the way of the removal of the retaining bracket for the shifter.
