Default S40 electric problem

Hello everyone...!

I put key into ignition and no reaction.Dashboard dead, steering blocked. So car pulled to nearest service (not authorized one).Checked battery (10 years old) OK,fuses OK.But one relay belong to ignition was hot.So replaced by new and nothing.Replaced by old one and dashboard working, attempt to start engine successful but...windshield wiper always on,remote control with no reaction to stop and error code SRS AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT (never before).Under this relay was smell of something burned. So, according to this mess electrician concluded that BSI CEM MODULE (fuses box ) is damaged and only way to solve this is replace it by new or used one.I called to official dealer and it cost 770 € (used about 120 €).Now i have a question. Can i use used CEM MODULE?I suppose all computers in car are connected. Will it work?So what to do now?

Im done

Was this diagnosis based on a DiCE / VIDA scan by your electrician?

My first reaction to hearing "no reaction.Dashboard dead, steering blocked" is low battery. Even if your battery is in excellent health (which a 10 yr old battery is VERY unlikely to be), if there is corrosion under the clamps, voltage at the Central Electronic Module (CEM) can be low enough to give the central brain of the car fits.

The SRS code will need to be cleared through VIDA even if there is nothing wrong. The SRS flag was probably set due to the single low voltage bad bootup event.

As far as using used parts, I bought and installed a used instrument cluster (DIM). It operated well, aside from retaining its donor car's odometer setting and engine service interval settings. According to VIDA, I should have re-programmed it. The DIM is far less central to the car's operation, however.

I don't think that putting in another car's CEM will actually hurt anything, but I hope not to have to make the experiment myself!

Thanks for your reaction!

Electrician dont have vida, only bosch diagnostic. In CEM are some of the chips burned so i guess there will be needed a new one.i really dont think used one will help according to things was spoken to me: every module is coded to each single car.

Any advice before i will pull car to authorized dealer for good (it will cost too much as well ) ?

I think it will be better to choose the new one and replace the old battery. Because, you can adjust with some other parts. But, battery problems will always be a biggest barrier for a EV user or any vehicle users. You should try with a new battery and replace the old one. This will help you also for a good running of vehicle and there will be no starting problems.

+1 what Bichael said.

There are some Volvo specialty shops that have paid for the subscription to the Volvo database that can do the everything needed, including software downloads.

If you are at all DIY, Chinese DiCE / VIDA setups are available that can do SRS resets, detailed Volvo diagnostic trouble codes, and 80% of other electronic interventions. You can get a VMware image of a VIDA install for free which will give you the same service information the dealer has.

And, when you change that battery, clean all the connecting surfaces. (Ask my how I know.)

Thanks for adding the conclusion. What sort of service center was this? Surely not a dealer: "From my ECM took chips to used one. After that programed with vida". In Maryland, Herb Gordon would only have replaced the ECM for untold gold.

Whoever it is deserves recognition.

That sounds about right. If they aren't trying to stay hidden, why not share the name? If they really did do reprogramming, they must have a Volvo subscription, and they need other customers like you to pay for it!

Sounds like you found a good set of mechanics!

When I get fed up with my dealership in Maryland, USA, I guess I'll have to take my V50 to Slovakia.
