Default S40 Engine system service urgent

Recently bought 2005 S40 (automatic) After driving a few hundred miles Engine system service-regular, engine system service-urgent, Brake failure messages have appeared. Took to mechanic on dolly. Car didnt want to shift to reverse to remove from dolly then key didnt want to move to off so I could remove it. New to volvos so not sure what is going on?? Also, windows seem to roll down by themselves intermittently. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like an electrical issue (almost always the case when you suddenly have warning lights / messages / symptoms from multiple systems). If I were to have to guess, it sounds an awful lot like a failed alternator that caused the battery to drain, which will start inducing all sorts of horrible behaviors as each of the (many!) computers / modules die as their voltage drops off.

Your window problem could just be a stuck key on your remote (if you hold down your unlock button, your windows all roll down). There could be a problem in the car's module causing the same thing, but I'd take a close look at the remote first.

Alternator tested fine. Key fob has a new battery, The ignition switch was changed out before I bought the car. My mechanic is thinking it may be a module connected to the switch but we are not sure which module it is or where it may be located??

Regarding the stuck key, there's a shifter interlock to the key (so you can only remove the key when the car is in park). if the shifter release button on the back of the **** is not fully out, you can't remove the key. you can try fiddling with the button to make sure it pops out and consider spraying in some lube, but the button itself can break. Check Youtube for vids on how to repair a wonky Volvo shifter release button or search for other threads. As to the other issues, there's something electrical - bad batttery, something shorted/opened which possibly is causing low system voltage. Given you had warning lights, your tech should do a full scan for fault codes. Note that some of your issues will require a code reader tool that can read chassis codes, ABS codes etc. Not all OBD2 readers can do that so you may want to find a shop with a full Volvo VIDA DICE set up.
