Default S40 Keyless Start - Confusion

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a 2010 S40 and so far I really like it. Very smooth ride, great interior, and excellent sound system.

However, I'm having some confusion about the keyless start that I'm hoping you all can help clarify. I leave the dummy key in the ignition all the time as I really like to be able to walk up to the car, get in, and start it. But I can't get it to start the same way consistently. Sometimes I can just turn the key and it starts. Other times, I get a message on the dashboard telling me to press the brake before starting. And this morning, neither worked. I had to remove the dummy key from the ignition and place it back in before starting (I can't remember if I pressed the brake when I replaced the key). It's not like the car has any trouble starting when it decides it's time to start, I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong? Can anyone explain this to me?

When mine began acting up it was a weak battery. What should have been 600 Cold Cranking Amps could only output 104 CCA. I replaced it with a much stronger one.

I'd suggest having it tested at Advance Auto, Autozone, etc. CCA is listed on every battery. The folks there have a tester they can hook to your battery. The bad news is that batteries are very expensive. I paid about $190 for the 7 year warranty model.
