Does anyone have any ideas why my S40 won't go into top half of the gears... No noises... just suddenly happened when going along... 2nd 4th & reverse seem fine... Stumped

 

No Check Engine light or flashing arrow of death?

 

Nope... No warning lights at all. Everything else seems fine.

 

Have you done any engine work right before this happened?
Check the linkages on the transmission to make sure nothing's blocking it from going into gear.

 

This is definitely a shifter linkage or internal box problem, by the sounds of it, part of the selector mechanism has become disengaged from the shifter. Unless the problem is obvious externally, it wil most definitely be an internal transmission issue.

 

The same thing happened to me on my 2008 V50.
Stuck in 2nd and 4th gears. No 1st, 3rd or 5th (automatic transmission).

I went to the dealer, they changed the TCM module for 1500$ and the same issue came back 3 weeks later.
When it happens, I stop the car and start it again, and it's back to normal most of the times (except for the check engine light that stays on)

Any idea? I'm running out of options, I don't trust my dealer anymore.
