S40 oil filter location
Hi Brad.
Get underneath the engine & find the oil sump at the very bottom. One corner the sump is shaped to make room for the black plastic oil filter housing. Inside the housing is a replaceable paper oil filter element.
Before starting the job, safest thing is to make sure that you have the right "cup" socket for removing & replacing the plastic housing without any dramas. The new paper element should be supplied with a new O ring type gasket to replace the old one on the plastic housing. Lube the new gasket with a little clean engine oil.
See http://www.lasertools.co.uk/item.aspx?item=1696 if you're not sure about the socket.
Re-tighten the plastic housing to 25 Nm torque (18.44 lbf-ft). Best to fit a new sump plug washer and torque the sump plug to 35 Nm (25.81 lbf-ft).
Regards.

Nope, '96 to early '04 I am afraid. You will still need a similar cup socket but size might be slightly different - you'll need to check.
Best if you enter vehicle details in your profile - because profile was empty, there was around a 90% chance that the car was '96 to early '04!
I suspect that the newer S40 will have the oil filter near the top of the engine - lots of new cars seem to have the filter housing at the top (I did an oil change on a 2003 BMW 320di recently & filter was indeed under the top engine cover).
Regards.

RE: S40 oil filter location
On the 2005 S40 the oil filter is located on the front of the engine. You will need to remove the plastic cover for the Fresh air intake. The you will need a 36mm Socket (I think it is a 36MM but not sure). The Housing goes from the top going down.
The oil filter is not the Same as the 2004 and older S40 either.

Yes, behind the alternator & the air duct to the filter box on passenger side front of motor looking in from grill, black round canister pointing up & yes 36mm. Just did this today. I just used big crescent wrench to get lid off. Make sure to use new o ring that comes with filter. Need torx to get spray pan off bottom to get to drain plug 17mm on back of oil pan.
