s40 thats rattling like a farm tractor..
hello ..
i just wondered if anyone out there had any idea,s whats happened to my s40.
its a 1999 1.6i (uk model) with only 70000 miles and over the last few months has started rattling very loudly and is getting embarrasing to drive.
it sounded like it was coming from the power steering pump so i changed this along with the belt.
no difference aaargghh! [:@]
it has a/c but no difference in sound when on or off.
engine itself sounds fine, something around the anxillary belt seems wrong (i think) but the pulleys didn,t appear to be loose when the belt was off.
noise worse when engine cold or at low revs.
would really be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction.
thanks for taking the time to read this

Hello mate,
Greetings from Narita, Japan.
As I'm not privy to S40, I can only give you my assumptions until someone who owns/drives S40. Or, other moderators may be able to help.
I wonder if the noise is coming from the hydraulic lifters for the valve mechanism. Do you change engine oil & filter regularly? If so, try to grab & shake everything in the engine compartment while the engine is stone-cold (overnight is the safest) to see if something is loose. Also, do a good visual inspection on the tyres, wheels and suspension components.
Additionally, make sure that the timing belt components are nice & tight. If something goes wrong in there, that's it for the engine.
Lastly, make sure that nothing is loose along the exhaust system. If you smell rotten egg kind of odor, the catalytic converter may be shot (it depends on the construction too, though).
I hope this gets you started or someone who's privy to S40 can help you better.
Cheers,
JPN
