RE: S40 tire recommendations?
I've got the goodyear assurance on my S40, and the goodyear assurance triple tread on our Odyssey. The assurance triple tread is an amazing all season tire. It's firm, grippy, loves water, and is super smooth.
The assurance is also good, and relatively quiet, though a bit softer in ride quality.
I'm running Bridgestone Potenza G009's on my Accord, and I love them a lot. they're very grippy and sport inspired. The Potenza and the triple tread are directional. Expect 80k out of the goodyears, and 50k out of the bridgestone. - Went with the 40k bridgestone on my accord because it doesn't get driven enough to take advantage of an 80k tire, it would dry rot in the time it'd take me to drive that far.

RE: S40 tire recommendations?
Very much appreciate your responses - the Tire Rack site was of great help. The reason I was getting tires (was all ready to get the GW assurance triple treads) in the first place is not because of tread wear (they only have 22k miles on them and were just rotated), but because I thought the ride of the car in general was abnormally bumpy. I attributed the rough ride to the dealers putting cheap tires on the car, but a local tire shop employee (who checked the alignment and balance and said they were fine) said the tires were ~$170/per Michelins! So, either I'm crazy, or the S40 is one of the bumpiest cars I've ever driven in!

Do you still have the stock shocks/struts/springs? The PO could have upgraded to a sportier type suspension. You could always go test drive another S40 at the dealer to compare the ride. My 2001 is just stiff enough for good handling and soft enough not to jar a kidney. I like it much better than my old 1986 240.
