S40 Water Pump replacement
I have the opportunity to purchase a 2004 S40 1.9t. it has 39,000 miles and the owner is claiming that the water pump needs to be replaced.
I am hoping to do this fix myself but am hearing about a "special" tool that is needed to hold the crankshaft in place?
Can someone please provide more details?
From what I have read, I can not understand why the crankshaft would move.

Do you have a Link?
I went to this site, Product Search
searched for the tool but couldn't find it.
I saw this one on ebay, Volvo Crankshaft Camshaft Cam Engine Alignment Timing Locking Tool Set | eBay, would this be the same type of kit?

That one will work but it's overkill really. The one for you is Kent-Moore Camshaft Locking Tool V9995714 I've not used it yet so don't know if it actually works. You just want to hold the cam gears from moving while you have the timing belt loose. Probably can make one out of scrap wood if you have the skills.
I would always treat the operation as if I were replacing the timing belt just in case. Line up the cam gears with their marks

and the crank with it's mark.

That way if you mess up you can always get it back together without the valves hitting the pistons.
EDIT: The IPD model says it's for 1998 and earlier NON-VVT engines. Just what I read.
Here is a version for Fords: http://www.ntxtools.com/network-tool.../OTC-6468.html
IPD pre-1998 version: http://www.ipdusa.com/products/5127/...t-locking-tool
