Default S40 won't start

Just bought a 2000 S40 T. Car is in great shape has 90K miles and previous owner had all the service records. Went to start it and nothing happens. All electronics are on and has plenty of juice in the battery but wont try to turn over the engine. Then finally after about 10 mins and 20 tries the engine finally turned over and started right up. Could this be the starter or some kind of other problem. Please help!!!!!!

thanks
brett

Try to get it to act up again. If it does test for power at the starter on the small wire then the key is in the start position.

oh man that sounds like the problem i might have.l

have a 2000 volvo.

my friend who drove it the other day told me that the car would rev for no reason when the car was idling... also the car couldnt start at one point of time.. i said i'll look into it.

so today i drove it somewhere and i realised first thing that the car was somehow driving itself .. like it was on cruise control. when i lifted on the trottle the rev counter would stay at 2.5k rpm .. when i came to a stop light the car did the same thing and revved HIGH .. like to 4k rpm when i shifted it to neutral .. also the engine temp shot all the way up .. when i shifted to D again.. the rpm came down and the temp also .. but this time went down to COLD .. and stayed that way.

Later on.. i reach my destination and finished my stuff, i couldnt start my car after that.

I popped the hood and looked at the (+) terminal and it was all corroded.. lots of gray/silver stuff around the terminal. I cleaned it with some armorall wipes (all i ahd at the time) but it didnt help, car still wouldnt start. It would crank and crank like it needed just a little more. I tried to jump start it but it wouldnt work as well.

I left the car there and got my friend to pick me up.

anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be? Funny thing is that the car remote system works, like i can lock/unlock the car perfectly.

thats samething I experienced, it would accelerate on its own and the engine temp would go way up and then come down!, also the engine temp would go all the way up and down for me too. Well if it Idles too lonng the coolant will spray everywhere, it was funny, because I just brought it into the mechanic they were puzzled. They popped the hood and were looking for something wrong but couldnt figure it out. Then after sometime of looking, the coolant sprayed and it was cool. Smoke came out, and they shut my car off and put some water on the coolant area to open it up and put some more coolant in their.

I betcha its the coolant sensor, thermostat and gasket.

That was the last problem I encountnered, then I sold that car and bought a 2001 s80 t6, havnt had to pay for anything for it except the 600$ 30k major maintainence.

If you install it your self about $150.00 or so.

That gets my Vote as well. The coolant temp sensor and thermostat.

I am thinking this should become a recall maybe, you are telling me the engine revs and maintains power when you take you foot off. Hummm that sounds kinda dangerous.

I have tthe same problem with my 2000S40.The RPM will rave to around 3000rpm always when the A/C is switched on and after will slowly return back to normal (1000 rpm).It always happens when the A/C thermostat starts to regulate the cabin air temperature (i can hear a 'bong' sound)and with just a light tab on the accelerator the RPM will rave to around 3000rpm (which should not be).Sometimes the RPM will even rave by its own without tapping the accelerator pedal.During hot climate driving is even worse the car becomes jerky becos of the surge of the rpm and even lost of power. When i release the accelerator pedal when driving the car still moves forward becos the rpm stays at it's last position i.e 2500 rpm.immediately when i switch off the aircon the rpm goes back to normal. In the car i can hear hissing sound for about 5-10 secs when the aircon is switched on and this symthoms repeats.Pollen filters, and idling valve changed,AC gas charged but still persist.
