Service And Engine Light

Service And Engine Light
New to the forums here! So thanks in advance for your help.
I currently have a 2001 S40 with 93000 miles on it. About two months ago my service light came on but after driving for awhile it turns off. But today my Check Engine light came on. The car drives fine and no strange noises.
Questions:
What could possibly cause the Service Light to come on and then go off?
Is there a way to pull codes without a scanner?
Are there any Parts Stores that offer free code scanning?
Or should I just take it into the dealer?
Thanks Again to everyone

RE: Service And Engine Light
your service light will come on for the regular maintanance schedule. If you want to disable it search the forum..there's a way to turn it off by holding the trip down and then turning the car on...
I believe if it is on for two times in a row the check engine light will come on. Auto Zone offers free codes but it will only diagnose the top of the engine, so if there is no code from there, it's a more serious issue. Hope this helps and I'm sure someone will hop on here and correct me if I'm wrong.
