Default Shift Stick Button Stuck!

I have a s40 from 2000'. The button on top of the shift stick gets stuck after I pressed it to change gear. Normally, that button flips back out after I changed to different gear. Now, After I pressed it to change gear I have to press the bottom part of the button to flip it back out.

Is it a big job to fix it? do I need to take it back to the dealer? Can I spray some wd40? Is it dangerous to not fix it?

Usually that happens because the bottom of the button section is broke up. The **** is pretty easy to replace.

Only a Volvo brand ****.
You turn the boot and push down at the shift **** to release it. Then put the car in like Neutral and pull really hard on the **** to remove it.(Be careful not to hit your self in the head when it releases)

Default yes its broken

ive been looking for that **** over and over and all i get is the entire shift
for example

http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/200...hift_knob.html

not even the one i need, cuz i need the wood grain..but yes if i can get the **** only, it could be useful to know...but where. if you know where tell me plz, cuz for example for the s70 there is a kit, instruction and **** only for replacing, not the entire shift which is good.

I just put in the **** ipdusa offers for the S70. I'm driving a S40 2000 and it fits perfectly. Except that the replacement **** is black. If you follow the instructions they give you, you should be fine. Try to push down that leather part before you pull on the shifter; otherwise you might pull out the entire assembly including the cover plate (which I did, but fortunately nothing broke)

Spray some WD-40 into the button (the seam where the button meets the shifter). I did that, and it solved the stickiness problem (and that was a year ago). Just saw your post now, sorry for the slow reply. Try this before you get a new part. Chris
