Default To synth... or not to synth...? Oil, that is.

Hello all. I have an '03 s40 with 244k miles on it. Recently I purchased a BMW '01 wagon as a second vehicle, with 182k miles on it, (don't blast me for it, please!) and I immediately changed the oil with BMW recommended Castrol Full Synthetic. Which got me thinking.....

I've always used conventional oil, usually 5w-30 for my volvo. I called the 1-800 volvo and they also recommended Castrol but would not specify what one or sae. But with the amount of miles on it, should I make the switch to another oil?... like synthetic or high mileage oil? Is it worth it?

I've changed it every 5,000 instead of the recommended 7,500. I want to keep this baby running, obviously, and I 've had no problems to date. Just wanted to see what the trusted s40 world has to say about it.

Some say fossil some say synth......My personal preference is Castrol Synth 5w30 for my 850 and nothing else. I also change it no more than every 4k
