Default Slow Coolant Leak

Hello everyone,

I noticed my 2001 S40 running hot all of a sudden. It was running great until about 2pm, then when I left the house to do some errands...I noticed a sweet smell, and my temp slowly crept up. The A/C was not on, but the fan, with my windows down. I pulled over and let it cool before getting back to the house, where I noticed some coolant on the ground. It must have happened right when I started the car when leaving to go get errands since the temp was normal when I drove home.

I checked the engine compartment, nothing was wet on top so nothing regarding the upper radiator hoses like last summer. Checked the clamps, seemed ok. Checked the reservoir, and dry all around. I noticed a very slow drip of coolant from the bottom, passenger side. I removed the bottom air dam, and noticed the bottom of the radiator, passenger side, is where the leak it coming from. I cleaned up the area, and waited for the leak. I noticed the leak is where the plastic meets the metal portion of the radiator.

Does this mean I would have to replace the radiator? If so, how easy is it to replace? I've read there are multiple parts attached to the radiator. I contacted the dealership and they stated it'll be about $700 parts and labor. Are there brief/quick instructions on replacing the radiator?

Thanks for all the help!

Chris

Replace the radiator. Do a Google search for instructions.

Radiators are normally very straight forward. Start removing stuff up top and on the backside until it comes free. It's really that simple.

I've personally never tried to repair one of these plastic/aluminum radiators. I have always been told it cannot be done.

Hello Hudini,

Thanks for the information. How long do you think it would take? I've read several removal instructions online from basic to very detailed. Also, would the radiator need to be removed from the underside, or is there a way to pull it out from the top? Thanks for all the help!

I've always pulled them out the top. It's a bit tight on the 1.9L models but it will come out. After draining the coolant into a container (it's poison to humans and pets so careful) you remove both cooling fans. Then remove all hoses. Now the upper radiator support. It should come free now. Just go slow and remove anything in your way.
