I have a 2004.5 s40 2.4i. Recently, there has been a strange noise coming from the car. It kind of sounds like a dog barking. It's quiet, but it will make the noise twice then stop for a bit. There doesn't seem to be any specific time that it happens, but it sounds to me like it's coming from the front of the car. I can't quite pinpoint where it comes from. Anybody have any ideas? It's under warranty, but I just wanted to see if you guys had any ideas before I take it in.

Does anything else happen when the noise happens?

 

No, nothing happens. I did some further testing. Everything shut off..no radio, no AC, all windows up. It seems to me that the noise occurs when there is a shift in the cars momentum, either accelerating or braking. It doesn't sound like metal grinding. Usually happens twice in succession, sometimes 3 times, sometimes once. Almost like something is rubbing. And it seems to be coming from behind the dashboard. Doesn't really sound likes it's from the engine, but closer to me.

 

There might be something in the dash that isn't secured all the way.

 

after more testing now...the noise is the same noise that happens when I switch the air from blowing at my head to feet or mid-section. This noise is really loud when I do this, and it makes the noise periodically while driving. Not sure of the mechanics of this system. Tech, do you know more about this system?

Could be a bad blend door motor.
