Ok, Hudini - So guess what! You were right!!! I got a P0193 (fuel rail pressure sensor-poss due to defective sensor, fuel pump, or filter)...plus three more error readings which I am guessing are due to the fuel pressure sensor misreading: P0420 (catalytic converter sensor showed low oxygen levels - poss due to engine misfire or catalytic converter failure), P0088 (fuel rail pressure signal above maximum limit - poss due to fuel control actuator, fuel pressure sensor, or fuel blockage), and P2177 (ECM detected a lean air/fuel ratio - poss due to low fuel pressure, blocked fuel filter, failed MAF sensor, or failed Heated oxygen sensor). They were unable to do a manual reading of the fuel pressure at the Autozone I went to.
So, my uneducated guess is that it is the fuel pressure sensor which has gone bad and is causing the other systems to produce error readings due to low actual fuel pressure.
Thanks for all your help!!!!

I'm glad that I found this thread! I have a 2000 s40 and I've noticed hesitation also. I recently moved to GA from TN and while I was in TN the check light came on. I pulled the code and ran it through and came out as a fuel pressure regulator. Besides the hesitation, does anyone get weird gear changes? Sometimes after it kicks back in it won't up shift until it reaches 4K rotations.

@angelandmommy: Given what others have experienced I'd guess the fuel pressure sensor too. It's a tad bit pricey though. $209.39 at one site I use.

It does appear to be easy to replace though. You have some basic tools?

@phoenixrob: Exactly which code did you get? I ask because the 2000-2004 S40 is a completely different animal than the 2004.5 and up. The 2000 models do not have a fuel pressure sensor like the newer models as the fuel pressure is maintained via an old fashioned vacuum/mechanical Fuel Pressure Regulator. When this fails the typical symptom is extended cranking as it takes a few seconds for the required pressure to build. Another symptom *could* be fuel in the vacuum tube between the FPR and the throttle body. I write *could* because fuel is not always present with a bad FPR.

Typically a misfire is caused by a need for tune up. Fortunately a tune up is needed only every 100k miles or so. Unfortunately it involves 2 coils, 2 plug wires, and 4 plugs which are not exactly cheap. So which code did you get again?

Hi,
It looks like this thread is pretty dormant, but similar problems still exist. My 2005 s40t5 has missed and stuttered, mostly under power, for the last few weeks. The onboard service readout shows DTCs in the BCM, ECM, CEM, and CCM modules although my code reader could see no codes until today. It sputtered badly today on leaving a stop light, and the code reader shows pending codes P0088 and P0190, pointing to high fuel pressure reading on the fuel rail.
Hudini's explanation above seems to make sense, although he is talking about a different code. Should I invest in a new fuel pressure/temperature sensor? They are not that cheap, so I want to be right.
Any advice would be welcome.

Any idea what it is??

P0193 OBD-II Trouble Code: Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit High Input

What the P0193 code means. The power control module (PCM) has detected that the fuel pressure is not within a range that has been predetermined by the vehicle manufacturer. When this happens the P0193 trouble code will be stored by the power control module and the Check Engine Light will come on.

What repairs can fix the P0193 code?

  • Add fuel to the fuel tank
  • Repair broken or shorted wires
  • Repair corrosion of the wiring and/or connectors
  • Replace clogged fuel filter
  • Replace fuel pump relay
  • Replace fuel pump fuse
  • Replace fuel pump
  • Replace fuel rail pressure sensor
