Is there a service manual for my S40 engine?
The engine for my volvo s40 is B4164S 109hp. I wish to learn more about this engine, and cars in general, but the thing is, it seems this engine is too obscure. I can't find any service manual to tell me what I am looking at under the hood. There are a lot of things under the hood which I don't even know what they are called.
Is there any service manual for this particular engine, or for a different but similar enough engine?

Start by looking online for the Haynes manual for the S40/V40. There are other online resources as well as the Volvo VIDA software (theftware?) you can find on eBay. If you are just wanted to better understand what's under the hood, you can also go to a dealer parts web site and look for the parts diagrams
Generally speaking Volvo engines of similar designs/years will have similar components - ie if you have a 1999 S40 with the 1.6L non-Turbo, you can follow along with how an NA 2.0 or 2.4 engine is set up. The various components can be categorized by function - ie fuel delivery, fuel metering, vacuum controls, cooling system and so on.
You can always post a picture to the board to ask, look for part numbesr on a device and Google it to learn a bit more. Really depends what you want to do. If you are about to kick off a rebuild and need specs, Haynes should be good enough.

You can actually find the Haynes manual online while you wait for the book to arrive - a few folks have scanned and posted the book as a PDF. The VIDA software is more than a scan tool - it also has parts diagrams, service info etc. Check out the Youtube vids to see what it can do. Again depending on what you want to do, there's a lot of info online - including vids on common repairs.
