Default "Time for Regular Maintenance" message?

2008 Volvo S40 with 175,800 miles. This message started coming up a few months back/1000 miles or so ago. It might have said "book time for regular maintenance" at first, can't remember. But now it says this at the present time. I'm just curious....is this just a general reminder that comes on at set mileage intervals and isn't a worry OR an indicator that something is actually wrong and needing to be fixed? I've had it come up in the past but my mechanic, I believe, always clears it when I get my oil changed. Or maybe I did on my own, can't remember, because I know you can also do it yourself. But I'm just more wondering the seriousness of the message itself when it comes up? If it's not serious, I don't mind just waiting for them to clear it again next time I get my oil changed.

I get my oil changed regularly every 6000 miles. Last time I got my oil changed was at around 174,000 miles and I won't be doing it again until around 180,000 miles, so not for another 4000 miles.

Thanks!

Yes, it is a maintenance reminder. See your owner's manual.

You can also clear it yourself if you want.

Here are the steps for my 2011 S40 as I do my own oil changes:How to reset 2011 maintenance light:
  1. Put key in ignition position 1
  2. Press reset trip odometer (odometer should be non-zero before resetting).
  3. Turn key to ignition position 2 within 2 seconds (keep pressing the button)
  4. Hold button until trip is reset and then information light flashes. (this can take upto 10 seconds or so).
  5. Release button within 4 seconds.
  6. Turn off car and turn on ignition to check light is off

Thanks for the replies to both of you. I tried looking in the manual but couldn't see enough detail on explaining it. So this message in particular for sure just means it's simply a maintenance reminder and doesn't also mean that something is actually wrong and needing to be fixed? Specifically just in regards to this message of course? Even at different wording when it seemingly went from "Book Time for Regular Maintenance" to "Time for Regular Maintenance" to "Maintenance Overdue" like it did?

My local maintenance shop reset it for me. But in the future, I can do it on my own instead of them with those steps above and that's ok to do? I see that mentions how to do it for a 2011 but mine is 2008 stated above. Are those still the same steps or is it different? What's the point of the message then if, from my recollection, it only comes up again after a long period of time since the last reset? Seemingly, you should be doing regular maintenance more often than that right? Thanks!

Yep, it is just a maintenance reminder. Book Time for Maintenance means schedule an appointment because it is due soon. Time for Maintenance means it is due. Overdue is self explanatory. The steps are the same for all P1 cars.

Not everyone does regular maintenance or keeps records of when to do it, so the message is a reminder that the car needs it.

The Time for Maintenance light comes on after 7500 miles, 750 engine hours or 1 year.

Just reposting this since I saw it didn't get answered. I know your instructions on how to reset it you mentioned were for a 2011. But mine is a 2008 so are those the same steps or is it different? Thanks.

I expect the steps would be the same as the updates to the S40 happened in 2004 and 2008, so I doubt the steps were changed between 2008 and 2011. Have you had an opportunity to check the 2011 instructions on your car?

It's the same procedure for all P1 cars (and P2)
