Default no oil pressure message

Hello
I am looking at a used 2000 Volvo S 80. While I was test driving it, a message popped up: No oil pressure, Stop safely asap. Also, the oil light flickered. The owner said he had never seen it before. He also said that maybe it's because he had not driven the car much since he purchased another. We checked the oil dipstick and it was full. The owner had the oil changed about 700 miles ago. The car has approximately 150,000 miles on it. My questions are can a dealer (or independent repair shop) determine if this is a false message or not? If it is not false, then I think it's the oil pump, what else could it be?

Thanks for anyone's comments.
Bob

The oil pan O-rings are a common failure that will make the light come on like that.

I think they usually get 3-5 hours labor to repair plus parts.

Tech,

I'm getting similar symptoms with my wife's car (2000 S80 T6), normally after running a while the "No Oil Pressure" message will flash momentarily with the "Oil" lamp. Often, this message turns off so quickly you barely get a chance to read it. It appears when the accelator is depressed, it doesn't occur, however when coming to a stop it may flash momentarily, it almost seems to occur after the stop (you know when you stop, if you had a cup of water the momentum carries the water foward then back, the light/message flickers on with the back motion). Also, it seems more prevalent when stopped in an uphill direction. Doesn't seem to occur when the engine is relatively cold, just when the car has been running a while.

This started happening just before the last oil change and has continued after an oil change (<200 Miles). The vehilce has shy of 56K Miles on it.

Could what you described in your last message in this thread be related or something else?

Thanks,
