Default Transmission fluid

What kind of transmission fluid do I need for 2000 Volvo S40 (automatic transmission)?
Is it synthetic or regular?

Thanks

I'm sure it's fully synthetic trans fluid.
Apparently the regular stuff can damage the transmission and knowing volvo they only recommend their own fluids and not to mix with any other!!

Thanks for your reply,

I called Volvo dealer, and they told me that fluid is synthetic.
Then I went to two differenet transmission repair stations and they both showed me the book which said
that S40 transmission fluid is regular Dextron 3. I am confused.

Fully Synthetic:

1. Volvo handbook says so.
2. Only a fully synth will last as long as is needed unchanged in a gearbox.

Regards.

There was a posting not long ago where an independant shop replaced the trans fluid with non synthetic. The trans was 'lunched'. Volvo reccommends synthetic and do not deviate from their reccommendation. Now, if you do not want to purchase your fluid from Volvo, then make sure the fluid that you are buying is synthetic! Lastly, if your question was posed in anticipation of changing your fluid, then be advised that the cost of that service by a Volvo dealer is only appx $135.00...............money well spent as that is a trans flush and they dispose of the old fluid.

Thank you. I'll go with synthetic.

p.s. it cost $280 by a Don Beyer Volvo in Virginia.

YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING...........................over $200.00!!!! The volvo dealer I use in the mid west is also a Mazda and G.M. dealership and apparently they are a bit more in line. I believe TECH mentioned that the late model Volvo transmission is made by G.M. and that may have a roll in my dealer charging considerably less as the fluid may be the same................
