Trunk Lid Open message

Trunk Lid Open message
After test driving a number of times, I bought a used 2006 S40 with ~30k miles on it. Literally on the drive home, the "Trunk Lid Open" message came on. I checked the lid a number of times over a number of days and it is definitely closed. I called the Ford dealership I bought the car from and they said oh, it just needs a software update, but after an internet search I found no software updates related to trunk lids. I am now wondering if the vehicle was possibly involved in a fender bender (though the title is completely clean). I want to take the car in under warranty to get it checked out, but I am nervous that maybe it was involved in an accident and so the warranty for the vehicle would be voided. Anyone ever hear of a software update that would cover an invalid "Trunk Lid Open" message?

Hi OP, here. I took my S40 to the dealership and they replaced the trunk hook latch on the bottom of my trunk, which immediately fixed the problem, the "trunk open" message turned off and has not reappeared. Luckily they were able to replace the part under warranty. I saw a bill of value of $180, not sure if it was for the trunk latch part only, or if it was for the part plus labor.
