turbo upgrade
I have a 2000 s40 1.9t. I would like to upgrade the turbo. Am I beeter off with a boost controller(manual or electronic), or buying a bigger turbo. Also, is my 1.9t low or high pressure turbo? Thanx for the feedback.
The LPT comes with a 12T turbo and the HPT comes with a 14T turbo. My chart suggests that the 1.9T model is the HPT version and comes with the 14T turbo. Which has a straight flange on it.
If your s40 uses ME7 software a boost controller might work, but might not as ME7 doesn't like boost controllers. If you want to raise the boost get an ECU upgrade done.
Also by just buying a bigger turbo it isn't going to raise your boost. What it will do is more effeciently use the boost your making now.

Thanks for the info. I'm gonna start with the chip tuning and a cold air intake, then move to the exhaust. I just haven"t found an exhaust system that I prefer yet. There is a local Volvo performance shop in my area that I found while out driving yesterday so I may stop in this week.
1. If you want the most power overall DO NOT START with the ECU tune.
Start like this...
A. Stage Zero
B. Intake
C. Exhaust
D. ECU tune
Why? Well one STAGE ZERO will get your car up to code like it would be from the factory. Two while doing a ECU tune first isn't bad it also wont take into account all the mods you have done. It will and it wont. It will know they are there, but it wont take full advantage of them. Most ECU tunes can be programmed to a degree of what you have on your car performance wise. So taking full advantage of the performance items you have on your car is key. So doing the ECU tune last will ensure that it is taking all the performance mods full potential.
If you were only going to do an ECU upgrade then just do STAGE ZERO then the ECU upgrade, but since you want to do intake and exhaust upgrades I suggest doing the ECU tune last.
Also always start with STAGE ZERO. Before any modding is done. It might cost a little money, but it will also make sure your car is up to code and ready for the added stress your going to be putting on it.
2. Have fun with the added performance once you get this all done.
*If you can do it all at the same time, then that would be the best thing to do. Install intake and exhaust system then do the ECU tune. Same day would be great. If not do it as you can, but do the ECU tune last.

Awesome info. I also plan (when i get my s80, haha. If the wifey lets me) on doing some more to this car and making it my mini project. I already have a 95 MR2 turbo that's been converted to a 6cyl twin turbo and a 99 corvette twin turbo, all bought at auction for less that=n 15,000 and have less than 10,000 into them. But I love drivin my s40I'm lookin at a 1/4 inch drop to fit 17' and low pro tires, along with a stiffer suspension, but not to stiff, It is still a daily or every other driver so still needs to ride wella larger turbo in the end and somewhere around 300hp at the wheels. wich brings up my next question. Can this car be made into manual or am I stuck with auto, and is a tranny upgrade available cuz stock probably won't handle 300 hp.
