Default Unscrewing the oil and coolant caps

Hi guys, new member here. I've got what I'm sure a lot of you will consider a bit of a stupid question, but I'm not expert so I thought I'd come to somewhere where I can get advice from those more knowledgable than me.

I've got a 1999 S40 and I can't unscrew the oil cap or the engine coolant cap in order to top up the oil and water. They're both screwed down fast, and I can't get them unscrewed no matter how hard I try. I've never had this problem with any of my previous cars. I'm guessing the only way to unscrew them is with a tool, and I thought maybe a sufficiently wide-mouthed adjustable spanner might do the job (if I can find one). Would that be the right kind of tool to use, or do I need something more specialised. I've been searching the web for answers and turned up nothing, so any advice would be appreciated.

there's nothing special about either cap, so I'd just use something like channel lock pliers or a pipe wrench (aka plumber's wrench) that can reach opposite sides of the caps. Once you get them to spin a bit you should be able to pop off. I'd suggest replacing the cap to the coolant cap (since its also a safety pressure release) and replace the gasket for the oil cap.
