struts refer to the front where the spring is contained by the bottom mount plate directly on the housing and a seat on the top that bolts to the chassis and the strut rod. shocks refer to the rears which bolt to the inner fender top and to the swing arm on the bottom but is not attached to the spring. When replacing the struts in the front you will need a spring compressor to remove the strut mount ie bearing/bushing plates. the rears can be removed directly without removing the spring. Note the front springs on the S40s (at least on my 2000) are very long and not all spring compressors will fit...
