Volvo S40 2011 doesnt want to move
Hi,
I have a 2011 Volvo S40 that has been running well for years. Recently, when I put it on D or R it just doesnt want to move. It does a loud Crrkkk sound for a few seconds and stays in place. I was able to drive with it for 5 minutes before it stopped in the middle of the street. I took it to the garage twice now for the same issue, the first time he checked everything, the transmission fluid, the cables, etc. He couldnt find any issues so I took it back. 2 days later the car randomly stopped again. No matter how much I press the accelerator it does not move on D or on R. The garagist which is someone I trust told me he literally checked everything and was able to drive the car. But I am worried its gonna stop again in the middle of the highway. Anyone has any idea what is happening? Thank you.

Did you have the car scanned for any stored fault codes? Did the tech inspect the axles to see if one may have backed out? I'd be curious if the shifter (ie PNP selector switch) is acting up. Have you tried a "shifter row" when it fails?
Any service in the recent past (on the tranny)?
It could be a "sticky" solenoid or other internal valve body issue - the first thing I'd do (unless it's been done very recently) is a transmission fluid drain-and-fill. It's a simple process and uses only 3-4 quarts (forget which) of proper fluid (I used Mobil 3309 on my V50). I'd also consider using 12 ounces of LubeGard Platinum (seems to work well at "unsticking" things in a tranny - I've personally had good luck with it though I don't generally like snake oil fixes).

Does it grind when it won't move, you rev it up in frustration, then shove it back into park?
Have any axles been replaced? The axles can become unplugged and not transfer power (the Crrkkk sound) Some right aftermaket axles the center bearing will "walk" done the shaft and the splines will "unplug" - grasping at straws here.
