What does it feel like to have a bad CV joint?
More likely a bad ball joint, does the clunk happen when you first apply the gas??, does it also happen when you apply the brakes??
Bad CV joints tend to show up at higher speeds or when turning tightly such as in a parking lot

I haven't noticed it clunking on breaking only when I take off. It also doesn't always do it. I'm not sure what could be the cause, but at least it works. The more pressing problem is getting my engine back together. The head is in a machine shop now. I'm not sure what all I should replace when I put everything back together. I know I should replace the head and manifold gaskets, but I don't know about the water pump, camshaft seals, and head bolts. Do you know why it is recommended that head bolts be replaced upon head reassembly? My old head bolts look like they are in perfect condition.
For sure you want to replace all of the gaskets you can, you probably also want to replace the timing belt, timing belt tensoiner and the water pump.
It's all about putting in a little money for parts now that are easy to replace when you have access to them, as opposed to putting the engine back together and then the water pump failing in 2 months and you gotta take it all apart again.
The head bolts are designed to stretch a little when they are installed the first time, so you should never re-use them.
And for sure you want to do an oil change after you get the engine all back together again, when you remove the head coolant can sometimes get into the oil passages and then you end up lubricating the engine with water. For sure change the oil

Hi Again,
Thanks for all of your great tips. My cylinder head has been disassembled at a machine shop and they said it wasn't cracked. I did need to replace all 10 of the intake valves. I ordered these myself and am going to deliver them to the machine shop. The guys at the shop said they weren't able to find the clearance measurements for the tappets (cap like things that go over the valves). Do you know where I could find this information? Also, do you have any sort of idea of how much I should expect to pay the machine shop for their labor? I asked them for an estimate, but they said they couldn't really answer yet.
Thanks again, JB
