And why does it randomly pop up? I can easily push it and it closes flush with the bumper, but it randomly pops up when driving.

BTW, this is on my wife's 2005 S40 T5.

It's definitely not supposed to pop up, but I think it's where the optional headlight wipers would go. Just a guess though; my old Volvo 850 had headlight wipers, so as soon as I saw this thing on my S40 I assumed that's what it's for...

 

That looks like the headlight washer. It pops out and sprays water on the light then goes back in. Something is stopping yours from going back in.

 

Oh wow, I didn't know our S40 has a headlight washer! That's really cool. I gotta try it... Once I refill my wiper fluid...

 

Not all have it. It was part of the optional Climate package.

 

So do cars without the climate package also have that rectangular cover there? What are some other features exclusive to the climate package, so that I can figure out if I have it or not?

 

Heated seats are included in the Climate Package as well.

Every Euro car in my area has the climate package so I couldn't say if there is a cover or if it's an entirely different bumper cover.

 

Our S80 has these. High pressure headlight washers. Tech do they really pop up and then retract on use? I thought it just sprayed out from under them, but Ive never used them when I wasnt driving.

 

Ah well my S40 has the heated seats so I guess I have the package. I'll definitely have to check these out. Maybe I'll go refill my wiper fluid later today.

 

Climate package includes:
Headlight Washers, Heated front seats, Rain sensor (auto wipers), Interior Air Quality System.

That's what I assumed it was, but just was not sure. Thanks guys. Looks like I have some investigating to do and find out why it isn't retracting.

 

On the S40's they pop out really far (6 or so inches) and retract. I'd assume the S80 is the same.

Next time you turn your car on, stand outside the car and hit the washer through the window. It's kinda funny looking when they do there job.

this is a headlight washer nozzle. it spray automatically when u first inital hit the windsheild washer. but it should return to the original position unless somethings wrong ie. the nozzle itself, the cover, or if your front bumper misalign...
