Default What is this? And how come when I take it off my car idles better?

Hello, thanks for looking at my post and trying to help!

I have a 2000 Volvo S40 1.9T and it idles very low, it is hard to start, and when I am turning and give it a lot of gas it starts to bog out.

I have replaced the fuel filter and I have cleaned the MAF sensor and I still have the problem. I have found numerous things that could be the problem but I just don’t know how to go about it. I am pretty sure that it is something throttle related. For some reason I had the urge to take off a hose on the throttle body and when I did my car idled fine. I put the first hose back on and removed the second one and it did the same thing. What are these hoses and is what is this disk thing? The person that owned the car before me had cut the catalytic converter off also but I don’t know if that could be a reason I am having problems.

Any help would be great! Thanks!

This is the disk thing that I am talking about
This is a hose that runs right over the throttle body
These are the two hoses that I can unplug to make my car idle a lot better, if I unplug either one it idles at like 1,400 rpm, but if I unplug both then it goes up and down between 2,000 and 2,500 rpm.
This is another disk thing that goes from the air intake tube to the throttle body

You probably have a very dirty throttle body. When you pull off a hose, more air enters the engine and it smooths out the idle.

Start by removing the throttle body and cleaning both sides including the edge of the blades.

The base program assumes a certain amount of minimum airflow and that's why your idle is so bad.

I was about to do this but then when I read the instructions on the bottle it said to not use on a vehicle with a turbo, do you think I could still use it or just play it safe and get a different cleaner?

I'm not talking about spraying cleaner in the throttle body opening while it is still on the car. Let me try again:

"Start by removing the throttle body and cleaning both sides including the edge of the blades."

While you are at it give the idle control valve a nice brake cleaner bath.
