I have a 2002 Volvo S40 with 40k miles on it. I just purchased this volvo about 3 months ago. The first week i started having an issue where it won't turn on when i try the first time and it usually starts the second or third try. This morning it took about 20 tries. Has anyone else had this problem? Or have any idea as to what would cause it? It doesn't seem like a battery issue. I was thinking more of a starter or ignition problem. Just taking a survey before i take a huge hit in the wallet. Thanks.

 

I HAVE A 2001 S40 WITH 62K MILES AND HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. AT FIRST, MY SYMPTOMS WERE THE SAME AS YOURS & MY MECHANIC WASNT SURE AND DIDNT WANT TO START CHANGING PARTS WITHOUT BEING SURE. LAST WEEK WHEN I STARTED UP THE CAR SPUTTERED LIKE FUEL WASNT GOING THRU EVENLY. ONCE IT TURNS OVER, IT RUNS FINE. MY MECHANIC CHECKED VOLVO AND THEY SAID TO CHANGE THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR ($96 FOR THE PART) THAT THEY HAVE BEEN HAVING A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH IT LATELY. HOPE IT HELPS. MINE GOES INTO TMO FOR THE NEW PART.

 

I have an 01 and I had to change my battery at about the same mileage.

 

This issue could be caused by many issues, ranging from corrosion on the battery cables to the car not recently having a tune up recently or even a dirty throttle.
