Are the doors supposed to lock automatically when the car is placed in drive? It doesn't happen in my vehicle but I hear a 'click' sound shortly after going into drive, if that is not for the door locks any idea what it is?

My 04 doesn't lock automatically, which is a bummer, so unless mine has a problem as well, I would assume yours doesn't auto lock either.....

That slight audible noise once in drive is the ABS check (I think). I read somewhere that it occurs at 8mph and it does this only once per start.

To have automatic locks, a dealer must download some software to your car's harddrive. The clicking noise you here might be your gas door locking.

Yep, it's the gas tank door locking. My 02 s60 does the same thing about 2 seconds after you put the car in drive.

Years ago, I got into a conversation with a Volvo mechanic who was trained in Sweden. At the time, he stated that Volvo doors don't lock automatically because of the heavy construction being safe enough during bad accidents and the reports that locked Volvo doors were slowing down rescues (specifically, with Hurst Jaws of Life.)

I still don't know if it's true, but it always seems to have been idiosycratic to the cars. I kind of like the idea that the doors are that well built. We always have the locking button beside us, too.
