Hello all, 06 s60 two wheel drive I have a small evap leak I believe it's coming from my fuel pump assembly. All the shops around wanted over $100 for a diagnose so I ordered a smoke machine. I have a normal odb 2 I don't have a scanner to shut off the evap vent solenoid so I'm going to have to do it manually. Does anyone have advice how to go about this? Is there a fuse I can pull? I appreciate any advice. Thank-you
If you have an evap leak coming from the fuel pump, you will clearly smell it inside the car. Fuel pump and level sensor is located under the rear seat. Pump on the passenger, level sensor on the driver side. $100 for a diag on a evap leak is not bad. I usually see $200 for any diag. Normally the diag price goes into the repair if you get the repair done at that shop.
Do you have any CELs? Do you smell fuel anywhere? Long crank to start the car?
Thank you for your response, I have Po442 01/02 Po442 Pd 02/02 on my odb2
I smell gas in trunk and car after driving ten minutes, I took off the back seat and got to the fuel pump assembly. I know $100 isn't that bad but I don't think it's going to take an hour to do so I I spent the $100 on a smoke machine that I can use whenever might need. I order smoke machine and the tool to take off the top of fuel Pump assembly. The check engine light it on yellow. The car starts up perfectly but there is a noticeable difference in the power. My question is the best way for me to close the evap solenoid without a scanner? In this car there open when cars off right?
Sorry, I dont have experience with the solenoid you mention. I never used a smoke machine for fuel lines, only air. So I can't really help you there. I take those caps off using 2 large flat heads, placing them in the notches and cross the two screwdrivers and use leverage against each other to twist. I do my best to clean the area prior so nothing falls into the tank. If you get your sniffer out, does the fuel smell seem to come from the pump or level sensor cap area? If you can smell fuel without taking the caps off, it points to the O ring under the cap.
A smoke machine is a good tool to have on hand for sure.
With a small evap leak P0442, it could be a bad o ring somewhere like the gas cap, filler neck, fuel pump, etc.
So today while using my new smoke machine I found a giant hole on top of the exhaust muffler. So now I'm at the point of looking for a new one.
This doesn't explain the gas smell in the trunk and car though right or would the exhaust also have that smell?
Any recommendations on a where to find a new exhaust muffler for a good price?
I think something was replaced at one point be the pipt that goes into the muffler goes straight down the car to the cat it's not different parts. So I'm going to have to cut the old one off and weld or clamp new one on.
The exhaust is 2 pieces. 1 piece from the turbo to the end of the cat ( or manifold to end of cat if no turbo). and one piece from end of the cat that goes out to the back of the car. Correction: the rear muffler is separate from the midpipe. You can get fairly priced ones off rockauto.
You were smoke testing the fuel system and the smoke came out of the exhaust???
Sorry for late response, Lol no I checked
the exhaust first and then the evap system. I had to wait to use a friends scanner because mine didn't shut the vents. I put on a new muffler and I also found the evap leak. It's coming from the leak detection pump. Im going to replace that and i willget back with an update.
Also using my friends scanner we got the code 439c
