2001 S60 - Hard stop to avoid accident, transmission will no longer engage
My father in law owns a 2001 S60 2.4T. I'm trying to give him a hand diagnosing this issue. He had to stop real hard to avoid an accident. Afterwards he tried to continue on and realized the car wouldn't move. It acted as if it was in neutral. His mechanic told him the codes he pulled (unknown to me at this point) were consistent with the transmission computer losing its information. He attempted to flash the computer and the flash didn't take. So from his standpoint the transmission is deemed a failure.
I refuse to believe the trans is shot. I think there must be something else going on.
Volvo's aren't really in my wheelhouse, although I have toyed with the idea of owning a few to tinker with. So I'm reaching out to you guys and gals to see if anyone has had a similar issue. I didn't really find anything relevant after a few searches which probably isn't necessarily a bad thing, or maybe it is...
Thank you for your help.

need to know if anything else happened other than a hard stop. My gut says anything physical that may jar the car wouldn't break the inside of the tranny - but could mess with wiring/connectors that were suspect to begin with. I'm with you having a hard time believing the transmission is a fail - I'd look at issues with the shifter (ie PNP sensor ), wiring connections to/from the transmission to the TCU and ECU, look for any physical damage (axles? did the car hit something etc)? may be time to go to a dealer or transmission specialist...
As I'm told, he drove up to an intersection, stopped then proceeded to drive forward. There was a pick up truck coming that he didn't notice. When finally did, he had a quick "come to Jesus" moment and He Man stomped the brakes (as you would after adrenaline fuels your bum hole pucker). He sat there with his foot on the brakes for a minute then tried to continue on. The car wouldn't move from then on. He said it acts like its in neutral.
I haven't found much info online in forums about the TCM needing a re-flash, but I did find somthing on repair pal. I don't know how relevant it is but a lot of people on there are commenting on having or had the transmission replaced.. I've also read that 2001 wasn't a proud year for Volvo and S60 trannys.

...but to your advice I'll look into the PNP sensor and associated connectors. I haven't seen the car myself yet, so I can't comment on the axles.. I would seriously hope the mechanic he took it to would have thought to check out the hard parts. I'm going to have the car towed to my house this week. This car might end up being my new hobby.
