It isn't because I'm taking shortcuts. It's because I have the tools and experience. Using the timing belt example, I actually remove more than necessary to do the job, because it makes it easier for me (I remove the ECM and TCM and housing). So if I can do a 2.5 hour job in 30 minutes because I have the tools and experience, I should charge for 30 minutes? But someone who has to look at VIDA for step-by-step instructions and go back to his toolbox between each step and take two smoke breaks can charge 2.5 hours?

I'm good at my job, that doesn't mean I should make less for it.
No, I'm not trying to make this a debate about book times, or about you. It's clear you're one of the good guys.

My point is that the entire dealership service experience is smoke and mirrors.

The only approach the mechanically-challenged customer can reasonably take is to blindly trust that he won't get ripped off. Too badly. Most of the time. "Just trust us." What can possibly go wrong?

But you can see why some untrusting people resort to various kinds of voodoo, like asking strangers on the internet what they think is wrong with their car.

Information removed.

If some Googler finds this in the future, basically if you don't trust your advisor, ASK QUESTIONS.

Ask to talk to the tech and be shown what you need.

Sasha Moscow, I'm curious as to what the solution was? If nothing else, check out Swedish Autoworks in Hopkins, off of Excelsior Blvd. Owner is Justin, total pro. I've got a 2001 S60 T5 that just hit 160K today.

After sometime and saving up, bought the Etm, replaced it. Same thing....crank endlessly without a start. Please help! Don't know what to do with it.

Why did you buy an ETM? Random guess?
