2004 S60 non-turbo excess crankcase vacuum
I have a new to me 2004 S60 non-turbo beater. I also have a 2004 XC70 turbo. I bought the S60 as a cheap non-runner. Now that it's running I have a crankcase ventilation issue. The symptoms are a whistling sound at idle and enough crankcase vacuum (suction) that it's a little hard to get the oil cap off. A Google search shows that it needs an oil trap. I have two questions, First, could it be anything else?, Second, do I need to change this immediately? Or am I ok to drive this while the parts arrive? If my XC70 failed the glove test, I would stop driving ASAP out of fear of blowing the cam seals, but with vacuum instead of pressure, should I also park it? It otherwise runs fine.
usually the problem is too much pressure - ie the glove inflates, but start by replacing the oil separator (aka flame trap). that's the device that connects the intake air path to the crankcase.
